On the 7th of December organizations Lice Ulice, ADRA Serbia and A 11 – Initiative for Economic and Social Rights organized an event to support homeless people “Nobody should be without a roof over their heads, nobody should stay without support!”.
The scope of this event was to raise awareness of problems faced by homeless people, especially during the winter and to collect items to assist them, such as winter clothes, hygienical products and canned food. Large number of citizens responded, and they continued to come during the whole evening to bring help to homeless people. At the event a music program was organized, citizens were offered some tea and they had an opportunity to get information about the most common problems faced by our citizens and neighbors without a roof over their heads, as well as ways to help them in future.
The music program was organized by BeGe Fank, Đani Armani, Kristijan Selimi and Šlager Majstor.
The idea for this event came because there is a growing number of people in Serbia who spend days and nights in temporary shelters and on the street, while official statistics have failed even to determine the scope of this problem. According to the most recent census data, there are only 445 primary homeless people in Serbia, without a roof over their heads, while unofficial data indicate that there are at least three times more homeless people.
Although the event was a success and we collected large number of items to help them, we would like to reiterate that there is no official shelter dedicated to homeless people in Belgrade or comprehensive social support for this category.
