The Network of civil society organizations fighting homelessness informs the public about the letter received from the Secretariat for Social Protection of the City of Belgrade, arrived in response to an appeal to the competent institutions to open overnight shelters in Belgrade for homeless people during the winter.
We welcome the fact that the Secretariat is taking into consideration the opening of the overnight accommodation center that is much needed by our fellow citizens without a roof over their heads; most of them live in Belgrade. We consider this one of the basic and essential measures to protect their rights and we hope that the opening of such a center will become a standard measure of social protection. Hereby, we inform the public about our initiative and willingness to help the Secretariat in structuring the work of the overnight accommodation center, based on our experience gained during direct work with people. We encourage the authorities to respond to this initiative in order to come up jointly with an adequate overnight accommodation model.
Moreover, we inform the public that members of the network participate in the Social Dialogue dedicated to improving the position of people in the situation of homelessness, organized by the Ministry of Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue. The next Social Dialogue is scheduled for December 20, at which we will make recommendations in the area of homelessness prevention and protection of the rights of homeless people. After the meeting, we will inform the public about our findings and planned activities.
We are appealing to the public to follow these processes and to work together to eradicate homelessness and fight against stigma and discrimination against homeless people.
